The original 19th-century mill became notorious during the Industrial Revolution for its unsavoury employment practices, luridly described by the commentators of the day, and the testimony of Robert Blincoe, a parish apprentice who had been indentured to work at the mill.

    HISTORY OF THE MILL. Litton Cotton Mill was founded in 1782 by Ellis Needham & Thomas Firth. It seemed to be doomed from the start. It faired poorly due to it’s isolated position. Transport of raw materials in and finished goods out was difficult and the area was sparsely populated so workers were hard to come by.
