April

Celebrate Earth Day on April 22.

In the Gardens

  • Record and sketch in garden journals.
  • Look for signs of spring. In the Wildlife Habitat, observe the new rubbery stems of wild rose as they grow; they are bright red and even the thorns are very flexible. Look down into the sword fern to see if the new fiddleheads are beginning to unfurl. Look for other emergent growth.
  • In the Multicultural Garden, take soil and air temperatures to compare. Read seed packets to determine what they advise when planting.
  • Experiment by planting some seeds directly in the ground, some in the cold frame to be transplanted later to bed. Compare to see under which condition the plant does better.
  • Outdoors plant: arugula, beets, broccoli, carrots, celery, dill, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, Asian greens, peas, spinach, Swiss chard, turnips.

Garden Maintenance

  • When weeding, it is easier to control weeds by getting at them when they are young and soil is moist, though weeds are easier to identify when bigger.
  • Plan after school weeding parties for Wildlife Habitat and other gardens. Provide food and warm drinks if it is cool.
